With a double orchestra playing on period instruments, six soloists and a separate Treble Choir this will be a monumental performance, and to enhance understanding of the music the work will be sung in English to the edition prepared by Ivor Atkins and Edward Elgar. The part of the Evangelist will be sung by Daniel Norman, the Christus by Giles Underwood and the orchestra is the Oxford based Charivari Agréable who have accompanied the Choir on a number of occasions in recent past.

Audience Comments

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your St. Matthew Passion on Saturday. What a lovely sound the choir made, all held together so beautifully by Lee Dunleavy.

We were both most impressed with the Choir – in fact it must be one of the best choirs in the Midlands. The balance, tuning, tone and phrasing were all excellent.
HD, Wigston

The Evangelist excelled, and the Christus had a wonderfully warm timbre to his voice.  The gamba player, the bass and wind sections of the orchestra were impressive, and all blended together with such amazing response to the conductor.
CR, Bushby

Congratulations to the Choir. Their ability to conjure up the image of a vengeful crowd came as a great surprise, as they exuded such warmth and love in their singing in the more reflective parts of the Passion story.
