Nicolae Moldoveanu – Conductor |
| Notes: |
In his last completed symphony, the “Choral”, Beethoven effectively redefined the genre. The highly charged expressive power of the first three movements find release in the extraordinary finale, a setting for chorus and soloists of Schiller’s “Ode to Joy”, in which the composer makes an impassioned appeal to humanity for universal harmony. The Bach Choir will be joined by Daventry Choral Society, and soloists Helena Dix, Anne-Marie Owens, Daniel Norman and Paul Putninš with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra all conducted by the dynamic Romanian conductor Nicolae Moldoveanu. Also on the programme will be Max Bruch’s classically romantic Violin Concerto No.1 with the young violinist Chloe Hanslip. Tickets for this concert are only available through the Derngate Box Office, Tel: 01604 624811 or on line at www.royalandderngate.co.uk

To mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Choir we return to our roots to perform Johannes Sebastian Bach’s great Passion According to St. Matthew. With a double orchestra playing on period instruments, six soloists and a separate Treble Choir this will be a monumental performance, and to enhance understanding of the music the work will be sung in English to the edition prepared by Ivor Atkins and Edward Elgar. The part of the Evangelist will be sung by Daniel Norman, the Christus by Giles Underwood and the orchestra is the Oxford based Charivari Agréable who have accompanied the Choir on a number of occasions in recent past. |

Requiem & Reflections |
| Programme: |
Gabriel Fauré: Requiem Gabriel Fauré: Cantique de Jean Ricine Craig Phillips: Dies Gratiae |
| Performers: |
Katy Crompton - soparano Rodney Clarke - baritone Solo Violin - Peter Thomas Northampton Bach Choir Queens Park Sinfonia Lee Dunleavy – conductor
|
| Notes: |
This concert will include two beautiful choral pieces by the French composer Gabriel Fauré, the miniature Cantique de Jean Racine and his Requiem. The former is a setting of a devotional poem by that great French tragic poet, Jean Racine, and the Requiem inspired by the death of his parents and using a non-liturgical text. The orchestration consists on lower strings, a small wind section and a solo violin gives the music a warm tine colour. Coupled with the Requiem, the Choir will give the UK Premiere of Craig Phillip’s Dies Gratiae – Requiem Reflections. This was written as a companion piece to Fauré’s setting of the Requiem and is scored for exactly the same orchestra, soloists and chorus. The original text by John Thornburg uses six sections of the Requiem Mass, each being set firstly as a short statement for soloists, followed by a reflection on those words for the chorus. Craig Phillips is Associate Director of Music and Composer in Residence at All Saints’ Church, Beverley Hills, and holds a Doctorate in Composition from the prestigious Eastman School of Music, Rochester in New York State. The soprano soloist will be Katy Crompton, and the orchestra the Queens Park Sinfonia. |
Audience Feedback
Many Congratulations! The new Philips work was absolutely sensational. Everyone I have spoken to who heard it was bowled over by the suberb rendition and balance of choir orchestra & organ which all reflected the composers intended mood. A triumph for the choir and I am so glad I didn’t miss the concert.

Audience Comments
I never thought I'd describe a concert at the Royal Albert Hall as "intimate", but that's exactly what it felt like ...an intimate, very informal "Royal Opera Gala" with amazing and very engaging soloists, a world-class orchestra complete with kettledrums and an anvil and, of course, our "very own" Northampton Bach Choir along with the Daventry Choral Society who were every inch the professionals - in sight and sound. I was both very proud and immensely pleased to be a part of the audience.
A privilege...
G.S. of Brington
A very professional performance delivered with confidence, expertise and just the right amount of fun! In nice impromptu exchanges with the audience, the entire program was a delight and the combined choirs a triumph of sound and emotion. A memorable experience.

There will be plenty of carols for the audience to join in and it is hoped that there will also be a guest appearance from a school choir.
