The music selected for the service of Choral Evensong at Coventry Cathedral is, in the majority, the same programme which will be sung at St Paul's Cathedral the following week. In keeping with the church calendar, the Psalm appointed for Coventry is 33, and an addition Introït is sung, marking the Eve of St Luke's Day. Composed by our Musical Director, Lee Dunleavy (b. 1979), this Introït sets the traditional versicle and response beginning, Pax huic domui (Peace be to this house: and unto all who dwell therein), from the tenth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke. Both services will include Henry Smart’s (1813-79) dramatic Evening Service in Bb with its fanfare introduction, the Preces and Responses by Richard Ayleward (1626-69), and the anthem Exultate Deo by Samuel Wesley (1766-1837), which Dr Arthur Wills described as “rivalling Bach himself”.
